History
The Beast Of Gevaudan is an animal at the origin of a series of attacks against human beings arisen between June 30th, 1764 and June 19th, 1767.
These attacks, most of the time mortal, between 88 in 124 listed according to sources, took place mainly in the North of the former country of Gevaudan. Some cases were indicated in the South of Auvergne, and in the North of Vivarais and Rouergue.
A media case
The case at first relieved by the daily paper of the region made fast the tour of Europe and made the laughing stock of king Louis XV, which we say incapable to kill the wolf which decimates his people. The “Beast of Gevaudan " will make speak about it at our European neighbours until supposed death of the "Beast" in 1765. Attacks will continue, but the French newspapers will be censored.
Victims
We speak about an animal "of the size of a very big wolf, a color of coffee burned a little bit clearly, having a little bit black bar on the back, a very big head ".
Jeanne BOULET, 14 years old, is the first official victim of "the Beast", on June 30th, 1764 while she kept cows. In August, 1764 a second victim is brought back, a 14 years old boy keeping too animals.
“The Beast" kills mainly of young children, and sometimes grown-up women. It attacks in broad daylight and sometimes at the heart of the village. Its killed up to 7 children on the same day.
